BISI BELE BATH
Ingredients For Bisi Bele Bath Powder
Coriander seeds - 2 Tsp
Red Chillies - 6
Channa Dal - 2 Tbsps
Urad Dal - 1 Tbsp
Cumin - 1/2 Tsp
White sesame - 1 Tsp
Asafoetida - a pinch
Fenugreek - 1/4 Tsp
Peppercorns - 10
Poppy seeds - 1Tsp
Cinnamon - 1/2 inch piece
Cloves - 4
Cardamoms - 3
Marathi Moggu - 1
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig
Dry roast all the above ingredients and cool at room temperature.
Grind to a fine powder and set aside.
Basmathi Rice - 2 cups
Toor Dal - 1/4 cup
Garlic - 5-6 cloves ( optional )
Shallots - 10
Grated Coconut - 1 cup
Powdered Jaggery - 1 Tbsp
Turmeric Powder - as required
Tamarind water - 1 cup
Salt - to taste
Ghee - 2 Tbsps
Curry Leaves - 2 sprig
Cashew Nuts - 15
Dry roast fresh or desiccated coconut in a pan to a golden brown.
Allow it to cool and pulse in a mixer to powder.
Pressure cook basmathi rice with 4 cups of water and salt to taste for 3 whistles.
Set aside to cool at room temperature.
Soak dal for 15 minutes and pressure cook till soft along with required amounts of turmeric powder salt shallots and garlic.
Set aside to cool at room temperature.
Carrots - 2
Beans - 5
Peas - 1/4 cup
Potatoes - 2
Cook till soft.
In a large vessel pour in tamarind water and another cup of water.
Add a cup of water to the prepared bisi belle bath powder and mix well without lumps.
Add this to the tamarind water in the vessel add salt to taste and switch on stove.
Allow this mixture to boil for 5 minutes.
Add the cooked vegetables followed by the cooked rice and dal.
Mix well and add the powdered jaggery.
Finally add the powdered coconut and transfer to a serving dish.
Heat ghee in a pan add the cashew nuts fry to a golden brown and add the curry leaves.
Pour over bisi bele bath in serving dish.
Serve hot.
Note
Adjust the spices used in bisi bele bath powder
Adding shallots or cloves is optional
Adding roasted coconut powder enhances taste.
Any rice can be used but make sure it's soft when cooked
Potatoes and peas can be added
Due to unavailability I have not added
Number of whistles varies with different pressure cookers available in the market
